Ludde and the wolf
It was a quarter past eight a lovely summer evening in late July 2009. Ludde and
I had visited Ewa and Achilles in Knoppe and we were about to go to the garbage bin at the road before we
got to the house.
Ludde walked behind me without a leash as usual.
I put the garbage in the bin and was about to turn around. Then I saw something that was about three meters from me.
My first thought was "That's a wolf." Beautiful and large. Ludde was small in comparison.
The wolf just looked at Ludde, and did not give me a glance. Probably it was a female, because Ludde was happy.
I yelled "Go away" but the wolf started to walk towards Ludde.
I took a step forward, and shouted. My horror was that the wolf
would run off to the woods with Ludde.
I saw no aggrisivitet neither the wolf's side or from Ludde.
When the wolf was a few feet from Ludde and from me. I was screaming at the wolf.
Then it happened that I was afraid of. The wolf and Ludde ran side by side away from me.
I screamed and screamed. After a few hundred meters wolf jumped over a ditch while Ludde stopped
and finally looked at me.
After have shut dog and cat in the house I ran to my neighbor. He called for a tracker and
because it rained so he found traces imprint which suggested wolf.
Wolf had also, I later heard, one hour before seen in a field a few miles
away.
In retrospect, everything felt like a dream, I felt so lucky that others also had seen it.
I called Länsstyrelsen for reporting but also I had a lot of questions.
Both the man at Länsstyelsen and I thought that Luddes clear and original signals to
wolf made the contact so good.
He also thought that I would have Ludde under surveillance a few weeks because wolves can stay
around a dog to resume his acquaintance.
Wolf was seen around a few days here but I did not see it. Ludde was in the leash for a month.
Furthermore, I realized even more the importance of having an obedient dog.
An nature experience that I will never forget!
